Figura rilevante del cinema underground, l’artista Mike Kuchar – che assume in questo film le fattezze di un pesce, poi di un astro e infine di un volatile, in un omaggio alla sfrenata fantasia del cinema delle origini – parla del suo rapporto con la settima arte, si ricorda del suo parto, rievoca la sua attrazione per le stelle, i centri commerciali e gli uccelli, la cui libertà si ritrova nella volontà del regista americano di esplorare nuovi orizzonti dell’arte del cinematografo. Il suo discorso si sviluppa secondo un principio di libera associazione di idee ed è rispecchiato dalle immagini oniriche dell’opera, la cui estetica rende omaggio a quella dei film a basso costo di Kuchar. Marie Losier fornisce un ritratto intimo e spensierato dell’amico, offrendo un atlante spiritoso dell’immaginario del regista.

A major figure in underground cinema, the artist Mike Kuchar – who in this film turns into a fish, then into a star, and finally into a bird, as a tribute to the unbridled imagination of early cinema – talks about his relationship with film, remembers his birth, recalls his fascination for stars, shopping malls and birds, whose liberty is to be found in the American director’s will to explore new horizons of cinematographic art. His speech unfolds according to free association of ideas, mirrored in the dream-like images of the film whose aesthetics pays tribute to Kuchar’s B movies. Marie Losier delivers an intimate and cheerful portrait of her friend and offers a humourful atlas of the director’s world.

Nata nel 1972, ha studiato letteratura a Parigi e belle arti a New York, dove ha conosciuto le figure più importanti della scena underground. Definita da Nicole Brenez come “una bambina scappata della scena delle piume di Zero in condotta” di Jean Vigo, ha prodotto un corpus di opere che documentano la vita quotidiana di artisti d’avanguardia in un modo onirico e poetico. I suoi cortometraggi sono ritratti documentari dei suoi amici registi, musicisti e compositori quali Alan Vega, Jonas Mekas, Peaches, George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad e Genesis P-Orridge. Il suo primo lungometraggio, The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye ha vinto una decina di premi, mentre il suo secondo Cassandro, the Exotico! è stato proiettato al Festival di Cannes. I suoi film sono sovente proiettati in musei come la Tate Modern (Londra), il Moma (NYC), il Centro Pompidou (Parigi) e il Whitney Museum (NYC).

Born in 1972, she has studied literature in Paris and fine arts in New York, where she met most important figures from the underground scene. Described by Nicole Brenez as “a child escaped from the feathers scene in Zero for Conduct” by Jean Vigo, she is the author of works that document the daily life of avantgarde artists in a dream-like and poetic way. Her short films are portraits of her director, musician and composer friends, such as Alan Vega, Jonas Mekas, Peaches, George Kuchar, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge. Her first feature film The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye has been awarded a dozen of prices, while her second feature Cassandro, the Exotico! has been shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Her films are regularly presented in such museums as the Tate Modern (London), the Moma (NYC), the Pompidou Center (Paris) and the Whitney Museum (NYC).
