“Le brave ragazze kenyane diventano brave mogli kenyane”, ma Zena e Ziki desiderano qualcosa di più. A dispetto della rivalità politica dei loro padri (uno progressista e l’altro potente uomo d’affari, sono candidati opposti alle elezioni municipali), le ragazze restano buone amiche, sostenendosi l’un l’altra nel perseguire i loro sogni in una società conservatrice. Gli sguardi che si scambiano, non lasciano però spazio alcuno a dubbi sulla natura dei loro sentimenti. Quando tra loro sboccerà l’amore, saranno forzate a scegliere tra felicità e sicurezza, in un Paese che punisce l’omosessualità con la detenzione.
Artista multidisciplinare, Wanuri Kahiu sceglie un approccio delicato, semplice – quasi il ritratto pop di una generazione, mostrata qui nella sua effervescenza - e sincero per trattare nel suo secondo lungometraggio un tema tabù nel suo Paese.

“Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives,” but Kena and Ziki long for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their fathers (a progressive shopkeeper and a businessman, opposed candidates to the municipal elections), the girls resist and remain close friends, supporting each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety.
A multidisciplinary artist, Wanuri Kahiu chooses, for her second feature film, a delicate, simple and sincere approach - almost the pop portrait of a generation, shown in all its effervescence - to treat a taboo subject in her country.

Nata nel 1980 a Nairobi, fa parte di una nuova generazione di narratori africani le cui storie e film hanno ottenuto riconoscimenti a livello internazionale. È cofondatrice di AFROBUBBLEGUM, una compagnia che sostiene, crea e promuove un’arte africana che celebri la gioia e la speranza. Nel 2008, ha diretto il suo primo lungometraggio, From A Whisper, basato sugli eventi reali che hanno circondato gli attentati all’ambasciata statunitense di Nairobi e a Dar es Salaam nel 1998, premiato per la migliore regia e come migliore opera all’Africa Movie Academy Awards. Poco dopo, ha realizzato un documentario sulla vita della keniana Wangari Maathai, premio Nobel per la pace, intitolato For Our Land. Il suo cortometraggio di fantascienza Pumzi (2009), cofinanziato da Focus Features, Goethe Institut e Changa Moto Fund in Kenya, è stato proiettato al Sundance nel 2010. Ha inoltre ottenuto il premio come migliore opera al Festival del cinema indipendente di Cannes nel 2010. Born in 1980 in Nairobi, she is part of a new generation of African storytellers whose stories and films have gained international recognition. She is co-founder of AFROBUBBLEGUM, a company that supports, creates and promotes an African art that celebrates joy and hope. In 2008, she directed her first feature film, From A Whisper, based on the real events surrounding the attacks to the US embassy in Nairobi and in Dar es Salaam in 1998. The film has been awarded for best direction and best work at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. Shortly thereafter, she directed a documentary, For Our Land, about the life of Nobel peace prize winner Wangari Maathai. Her science-fiction short film Pumzi (2009), co-financed by Focus Features, Goethe Institut and Changa Moto Fund in Kenya, was screened at Sundance in 2010. It also got the award for best work at the Cannes Independent Film Festival in 2010. She is currently working at the documentary feature GER (To Be Separate) and at the pre-production of Rusties, a science fiction film. Rafiki is her second fiction feature.
