2011, Il Cairo: una folla inferocita piange la morte dei martiri del popolo, manifestando contro la famiglia Mubarak. Parallelamente, una famiglia si prepara per raggiungere la folla nelle strade. Il suono assordante del televisore si confonde con l’eco della rivolta delle strade. Un giovane martire muore, torturato e ucciso da un regime oppressore. Un bimbo nasce già sporco del sangue del suo popolo.
La giustapposizione di materiale d’archivio e filmati casalinghi trasportano la dimensione intima del focolare domestico nel mezzo della rivolta, in uno scambio reciproco e simbiotico fatto di memoria, sangue e sofferenza.

2011, Cairo: a furious crowd cries the death of his martyrs, demonstrating against Mubarak’s family. In the mean time, a family gets ready to join the crowd on the streets. The deafening sound of the television mixes up with the echoes of the street’s revolt. A young martyr dies, tortured and killed by an oppressive regime. A child is born covered with the blood of the people.
The juxtaposition of archive footage and homemade videos carries the family hearth’s intimate dimension
in the middle of the riot, in a mutual and symbiotic exchange made by memory, blood and suffering.

È un artista, fotografo e regista nato a Damasco, Siria, nel 1972. Durante i suoi studi in Amministrazione Aziendale all’Università di Damasco, al-Beik scopre la fotografia, che lo instraderà verso la sua carriera da regista. Già dai primi anni novanta si serve dei due medium per esprimere attraverso la sua arte una critica verso la realtà politica e sociale del suo tempo, organizzando mostre fotografiche e girando dei cortometraggi fortemente influenzati dai suoi studi fotografici. Nel 2006 il suo I Am the One Who Brings Flowers to Her Grave è il primo film siriano ad essere selezionato alla Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia, valendogli il premio Provincia Autonoma di Trento Doc/it. Tornerà a Venezia nel 2011 col suo The Sun’s Incubator. Nel corso degli anni i suoi lavori sono stati presentati a livello internazionale in numerosi festival e musei tra cui: il MoMa di New York, il Centre Pompidou di Parigi, l’EYE Film Museum di Amsterdam, il Cinéma du réel, la Berlinale, il festival di Rotterdam e quello di Locarno.

He is an artist, photographer and film-maker born in Damascus, Syria in 1972. During his studies in Bussiness Administration at the University of Damascus, al-Beik discovers photography, which leds him towards his film-making career. Starting in the first years of the 90’s, he uses both medium to express through his art a critic towards the political and social reality of his times, organizing photo exhibitions and making short movies, deeply influenced by his photographic studies. In 2006, his I Am the One Who Brings Flowers to Her Grave is the first Syrian movie been selected at the Venice Film Festival, earning the Provincia Autonoma di Trento Doc/it Award. He will be again in Venice with The Sun’s Incubator. During the years his works have been shown internationally in many festivals and museums such as: New York’s MoMa, Paris’s Centre Pompidou, Amsterdam’s EYE Film Museum, Cinéma du Réel International Documentary Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival and Locarno Film Festival.
