Frank (Ripploh) è un insegnante che conduce una vita scandita da riunioni scolastiche e capatine ai bagni pubblici di Berlino Ovest. Al centro dell’ambiente gay della città, Frank si oppone con fervore alla monogamia e si gode le gioie della promiscuità, la sorpresa galvanizzante dell’incontro casuale. Bernd, invece, è un romantico sognatore che spera di potere presto trasferirsi in campagna, lontano dal trambusto metropolitano, e lì trascorrere le sue giornate con l’uomo giusto. Malinconico cassiere in un cinema, Bernd s’imbatte nello scapolo impenitente con cui vivrà una relazione turbolenta.
Opera manifesto del cinema queer pre-AIDS, Taxi zum Klo è un film audace, quasi autobiografico, che estremizza il conflitto tra ruolo sociale e vita privata, sfidando le certezze del mondo eteronormativo e mostrando una realtà tanto brulicante quanto sommersa.

Frank (Ripploh) is a teacher who leads a life punctuated by schools meetings and quick stops in the public baths of West Berlin. At the heart of the city gay’s life, Frank fervently opposes monogamy and enjoys the delights of promiscuity, the galvanizing surprise of random encounters. Bernd, instead, is a romantic dreamer who hopes to move soon to the countryside, away from the urban bustle, some place where to spend his days with the right man. He is a gloomy cashier in a cinema, where he stumbles upon the impenitent bachelor with whom he will live a turbulent relationship.
Milestone of pre-HIV queer cinema, Taxi zum Klo is a bold, almost autobiographical film that takes the conflict between social role and private life to extremes, challenging the certainties of the heteronormative world and portraying a reality as swarming as it is submerged.

Attore, sceneggiatore, produttore e regista tedesco, classe 1949. Rese pubblica la propria omosessualità tanto da comparire sulla copertina del periodico “Stern” e mettendo a repentaglio la propria carriera di insegnante. Girato con un budget estremamente ridotto, Taxi zum Klo è il suo primo lungometraggio, grazie al quale ha acquisito una popolarità immediata e scandalosa. Nel 1981 il film si aggiudica il premio Max Ophüls. Con lo pseudonimo Peggy von Schnottgenberg aveva già pubblicato dei racconti e preso parte ad alcuni film di Rosa von Praunheim e Ulrike Ottinger. Nel 1982 recita nel capolavoro di Fassbinder, Querelle de Brest e ottiene un ruolo nel film fantascientifico Kamikaze 69 del regista svedese Per Wahlöö, in cui lo stesso Fassbinder è attore protagonista. Nel corso degli anni si è dedicato anche alla critica cinematografica. Ha inoltre diretto e prodotto Miko – Aus der Gosse zu den Sternen (1986) e Taxi nach Kairo (1987), nel quale torna a raccontare le vicissitudini di Frank. Si è spento nel 2002.

He was a German actor, screenwriter, producer and director, born in 1949. He went public about his homosexuality enough to appear on the cover of the magazine “Stern”, putting his teaching career to jeopardy. Shot on an extremely tight budget, Taxi zum Klo was his first feature film, thanks to which he gained an immediate and scandalous popularity. In 1981 the film won the Max Ophüls award. Under the pseudonym Peggy von Schnottgenberg he had already published short stories and also participated in some films by Rosa Praunheim and Ulrike Ottinger. In 1982 he played a role in one of Fassbinder’s masterpieces, Querelle de Brest and got a role in the sci-fi film Kamikaze 69 by Swedish director Per Wahlöö, in which Fassbinder himself was a leading actor. Over the years he has dedicated himself to film criticism. He also directed and produced Miko – Aus der Gosse zu den Sternen (1986) and Taxi nach Kairo (1987), in which he came back to the vicissitudes of Frank. He died in 2002.
