M.I.A. - La ragazza cattiva della musica

Originaria dello Sri Lanka, figlia del leader del movimento indipendentista Tamil, trasferitasi a Londra all’età di 9 anni con la famiglia a causa della guerra civile, Matangi “Maya” Arulpragasam in arte M.I.A. ha da sempre fatto i conti con il sospetto e l’intolleranza della gente. Con la musica nel sangue fin da piccola, la giovane Maya decide di raccontare il mondo attraverso una cinepresa diventando una documentarista. Tornata quindi in patria per un progetto sulle proprie origini, trova però la musica. Attraverso inedito materiale d’archivio, in parte girato dalla stessa M.I.A., il documentario ricostruisce la vita e l’ascesa della “bad girl” della musica pop, tra successo, censura e attivismo politico.
Born in Sri Lanka, daughter of the founder of the Tamil independence movement, moved to London from the civil war with her family at 9 years old, Matangi “Maya” Arulpragasam AKA M.I.A. always reckoned with people’s suspect and intolerance. Music in her bones since her childhood, the young Maya decides to illustrate the world with a camera becoming a documentarist. Back in her native land for a project about her origin, she finds instead the music. Using original archive material, partially shot by M.I.A. herself, the documentary retrace the life and the ascent of the “bad girl” of pop music, between success, censorship and political activism.

Digital artist e filmmaker londinese. Nel 1995 studia cinema e video arte alla Central St. Martin di Londra dove conosce e diventa amico di M.I.A. Dopo la scuola, si specializza in animazione e modellazione 3D, collaborando nell’industria videoludica a progetti come Grand Theft Auto. Parallelamente inizia a curare la veste grafica dei progetti musicali dell’amica. Nel 2018 dirige Matangi/Maya/M.I.A., sua opera prima che gli vale il World Cinema Documentary Special Award al Sundance Film Festival.
He is a digital artist and filmmaker from London. In 1995 he studied film and video art at the Central St. Martin Fine Art School in London, where he met and became friend with M.I.A. After school, he specialized in animation and 3D modeling, collaborating in the videogame industry at game such as Grand Theft Auto. At the same time, he started to working on the visuals of his friend’s music projects. In 2018 he directed, Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. his debut feature-lenght documentary which won the World Cinema Documentary Special Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
