Durante un photoshoot per il suo ultimo lavoro a New York, Ronit riceve una chiamata inaspettata che la avvisa della morte del padre, il rabbino Rav Krushka, con cui aveva da tempo perso ogni rapporto. Tornata a Londra per il funerale, Ronit si ritrova dentro una comunità chiusa e diffidente, da cui era stata cacciata per l’interesse che nutriva per una donna, Esti, adesso moglie del loro amico di infanzia Dovid. Desiderosa di risolvere le faccende burocratiche e tornare in fretta a New York, Ronit verrà però trattenuta dalle attenzioni della sua vecchia amica. Presto il rapporto irrisolto tra le due donne si riaccenderà in una passione rimasta sopita per molto tempo, generando dubbi e insicurezze nel cuore di Dovid e mettendo in discussione le regole e i dogmatismi di tutta la comunità.
During a photoshoot for his last work in New York, Ronit receives an unexpected call that inform her of her father’s death, the Rabbi Rav Krushka, with whom she had lost all kind of relation. Back to London for the funeral, Ronit found herself inside a narrow-minded and suspicious community, from which she was shunned for her interest toward another woman, Esti, now wife of their childhood friend Dovid. Willing to settle all the bureaucratic issues to go back to New York, Ronit will be hold back by her late friend’s attentions. Soon, their unresolved relation will rekindle in a long lost passion, generating uncertainties in Dovid’s heart and questioning the rules and dogmatism of the entire community.

Dopo essersi laureato alla Escuela de Cine de Chile di Santiago, ha iniziato la sua carriera da cineasta realizzando cortometraggi. Nel 2003 ha co-diretto con Carlo Fuentes Cero un documentario basato su materiali inediti dell’attacco dell’11 settembre. Insieme a Fernando Lavanderos ha invece curato la regia di due stagioni della celebre serie di documentari Mi mundo privado. Dal 2005 in poi ha diretto quattro lungometraggi molto apprezzati, ognuno dei quali vincitore di premi in festival internazionali: La sagrada familia (2005), Navidad (2009), El año del tigre (2011) e Gloria (2013). Con Una Mujer Fantastica (2017) raggiunge la fama internazionale vincendo il Premio Oscar come Miglior Film Straniero. Dopo Disobedience lavora al remake del suo Gloria, questa volta interpretato da Julianne Moore e John Turturro, uscito nel 2019 col titolo Gloria Bell.
After graduating from the Escuela de Cine de Chile in Santiago, he started his career as a director making short movies. In 2003 he co-directed with Carlos Fuentes Cero a documentary based on unedited material from 9/11. He directed tow seasons of the successful documentary series My private life, together with Fernando Lavanderos. From 2005 on, he directed four remarkable feature films, which all garnered awards in the festival circuit: The Sacred Family (2005), Christmas (2009), The Year of the Tiger (2011) and Gloria (2013). With A Fantastic Woman he gained international fame winning the Oscar for the Best Foreign Movie. After Disobedience, he works at the remake of his Gloria, now performed by Julienne Moore and John Turturro, released in 2019 with the title Gloria Bell.
