Mentre si ritrova a studiare in Belgio, uno studente sudafricano scopre che l’origine dei suoi antenati non combacia con le storie che gli sono state raccontate. Riflettendo sulle implicazioni di tale scoperta, mette in dubbio la propria identità e si rende conto che le sue radici non affondano in nessuno dei due continenti. Ricorrendo a una messinscena sobria e precisa, Jurg Slabbert realizza un documentario autobiografico che ripercorre le vicissitudini multigenerazionali della propria famiglia. Affinità e divergenze emergono quasi involontariamente come forme e tratti preesistenti, inalienabili, che sonnecchiano, mimetizzati, ancorati all’ereditarietà dei corpi.
While studying in Belgium, a South African student learns that his ancestors’ origin is not what he was told. Reflecting on the revelation, he questions his own identity and realises that his roots are neither here nor there. Drawing upon a sober and precise mise-en-scène, Jurg Slabbert creates an autobiographical documentary that traces the multigenerational vicissitudes of his family. Affinities and divergences emerge almost involuntarily as pre-existing, inalienable forms and traits, which doze, camouflaged, anchored on the hereditariness of the bodies.

È un giornalista sudafricano, vincitore, nel 2015, del premio Standard Bank Sikuvile. Di recente ha spostato la sua attenzione sul cinema documentario. Nel 2017 ha conseguito una laurea a doppio titolo in regia documentaristica in seno al programma DocNomads presso la LUCA School of Arts di Bruxelles. Slabberts è il suo quarto cortometraggio.
He is a South African journalist, winner of the Standard Bank Sikuvile Award in 2015. He has recently shifted his focus to documentary film. In 2017 he graduated from the DocNomads joint master’s degree in documentary film directing at the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. Slabberts is his fourth short film.
