Il primo lungometraggio di Mathews, I Want Your Love (2012), ha debuttato al Frameline Film Festival ed è stato definito da Andrew Haigh come “un film audace che ci offre uno spaccato unico e senza filtri sulle vite di un’intera generazione di uomini gay”. He collaborated with James Franco to make Interior. Leather Bar, celebrated by The New York Times as “one of the sharpest, best surprises” of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Mathews' feature narrative debut, I Want Your Love (2012), premiered at the Frameline Film Festival and was called by Andrew Haigh “a bold film with rare insight into the uncensored lives of a generation of gay men”. He has released three documentaries for his In Their Room series – dedicated up to now to London, Berlin and San Francisco – in which he films without censorship men in the privacy of their rooms. He has been president of the Queer Palm jury at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
