Due fratelli s’incontrano dopo dieci anni di assenza. Uno, diventato nel frattempo attore cinematografico a Parigi e di passaggio nel suo paese natale, si ferma a casa del fratello, barbiere, che ha preso il posto del padre nel salone di un paesino situato nel sud-ovest della Francia più profonda. Non hanno più niente in comune, neanche il cognome. Soltanto il salone non è cambiato. In questo luogo desueto avviene il confronto tra i due fratelli. Gli specchi ormai opachi riflettono i loro dialoghi, le loro liti e i tentativi di riavvicinamento. Ma la frattura è irreparabile. Un testo teatrale di Jacques Nolot portato allo schermo in una elegante riduzione televisiva in bianco e nero da André Téchiné: il primo incontro con la storia e il mondo di Jacques Nolot, l’antefatto essenziale di ogni sua altra opera.
Two brothers meet after ten years of absence. One, become in the meantime a cinematographic actor in Paris and passing through his native village, is hosted at his brother’s, a barber who took their father’s place in the barbershop of a small village Southwest the deepest France. They don’t have anything to share anymore, not even the surname. Only the barbershop didn’t change. In this obsolete place the exchange between the two brothers takes place. The by now opaque mirrors reflect their dialogues, their arguments, and their attempts of reconciliation. But the rift is irreparable. A theatrical text by Jacques Nolot brought to the screen in an elegant television reduction in black and white by André Téchiné: his first encounter with Jacques Nolot’ story and universe, the essential background of all his following works.

Regista e sceneggiatore, comincia la sua carriera come critico cinematografico per la rivista Les Cahiers du cinéma, mentre il suo debutto cinematografico dietro la macchina da presa è Paulina s'en va (1969), anche se Techiné considera come suo esordio Souvenirs d'en France (1975). Nel 1979 realizza Les Sœurs Brontë, film con Isabelle Adjani e con la partecipazione di Roland Barthes, suo grande estimatore. Con Hôtel des Amériques (1981) comincia il sodalizio con Catherine Deneuve, che si consacra come una delle sue attrici-simbolo. Nel 1985 vince il premio per la migliore regia al Festival di Cannes con Rendez-vous. Nel 1995 vince il Premio César per il miglior film, la migliore regia e la migliore sceneggiatura con L'età acerba, che ottiene anche il Premio Louis-Delluc. Ha inoltre recitato nei film La Maman et la Putain (1973) di Jean Eustache e Les Ministères de l'art (1988) di Philippe Garrel.
He is a screenwriter and a film director. He starts his career as a film critic, by writing for Cahiers du cinema. He makes his debut as a director with Paulina is leaving (1969), even though he believes French Provincial (1975) to be his real debut. In 1979, he makes The Brontë Sisters, starring Isabelle Adjani and his great admirer Roland Barthes. With Hotel America (1981), he starts his long collaboration with Catherine Deneuve, who becomes one of his emblematic actresses. In 1985, he wins the Best Direction Award at the Cannes Film Festival with Rendez-Vous. In 1995, he wins the César Awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay with Wild Reeds, which earns also the Prix Louis-Delluc. Téchiné has also appeared as an actor in Jean Eustache’s The Mother and the Whore (1973) and in Philippe Garrel’s The Ministries of Art (1988).
