Dopo dieci anni di assenza, Jacques Pruez, attore cinquantenne e single, torna nel suo paese per assistere agli ultimi giorni della madre. Yvan, suo padre, parrucchiere del paese, non crede alla malattia della moglie e pensa che siano i medici a volerla uccidere. Nel frattempo scoppierà una violenta lite con il fratello Alain, poliziotto a Bordeaux, come conseguenza alla questione legata all’affidamento del padre dopo la morte della madre. Per la sua opera prima, l'attore Jacques Nolot ritorna nel suo paese natale per fare i conti con la propria gioventù. L'Arrière-pays racconta con acume e senza malizia il ritratto acido e preciso di una certa provincia profonda.
After ten years of absence, Jacques Pruez, a fifty-year-old single actor, returns to his village to assist his dying mother. His father Yvan, the village’s hairdresser, does not believe his wife's illness and thinks her condition is caused by her physicians, who want to kill her. In the meantime, a furious row about who will take care of Yvan after his wife’s death breaks out between Jacques and his brother Alain, a policeman in Bordeaux. For his first feature, the actor Jacques Nolot returns to his hometown to reckon with his youth. L'Arrière-pays depicts with insightful and artless strokes a sour and sharp portrait of French small-town life.

Nato nel 1943 a Marcillac, è un noto regista, attore e sceneggiatore. Il suo primo film da regista, L'arrière-pays (1998) ha vinto il premio come miglior opera prima al Montreal World Film Festival oltre che una menzione speciale FIPRESCI al Festival del Cinema di Venezia. Per il suo primo lungometraggio Nolot ha inoltre ricevuto una nomination ai César Awards come miglior regista di un’opera prima nel 1999. Nel 2002 dirige e interpreta La chatte à deux têtes; il suo film più recente da regista è Avant que j’oublie (2007). Ha inoltre scritto numerose sceneggiature, tra le quali Niente baci sulla bocca (1991), La matiouette ou l’arrière-pays (1983), entrambi i film diretti da André Téchiné, e anche Le café des Jules (1989), diretto da Paul Vecchiali. Ha recitato nei film El hotel de las Américas (1981), Viva la vita (1984), El lugar del crimen (1986), Les innocents (1987) e Nénette e Boni (1996). I film da lui diretti, così come le sue sceneggiature, hanno molti elementi autobiografici.
Born in 1943 in Marcillac, he is a very well-known actor, director and screenwriter. His first feature film as director, L'arrière-pays (1998), won the First Film Special Distinction Award at the Montreal World Film Festival and a FIPRESCI Special Mention Award at the Venice Film Festival, both in 1998. It also earned a nomination for Best New Director of a Feature Film at the César Awards in 1999. He directed and played a role in La chatte à deux têtes (2002); his most recent film as a director is Before I Forget (2007). He wrote several screenplays including J’embrasse pas (1991), La matiouette ou l'arrière-pays (1983), both directed by André Téchiné, and Le café des Jules (1989), directed by Paul Vecchiali. As an actor Nolot performed in films such as El hotel de las Américas (1981), Viva la vita (1984), El lugar del crimen (1986), Les innocents (1987) and Nénette e Boni (1996). His films as well as his screenplays have many autobiographical elements.
