Thomas è un giovane pasticcere tedesco. Ha una relazione clandestina con Oren, un uomo sposato israeliano che per lavoro si trova spesso a Berlino. Quando Oren muore in un incidente stradale, Thomas parte per Gerusalemme alla ricerca di risposte sulla sua morte. È qui che conosce Anat, la vedova dell’amante, che gestisce un piccolo caffè. Celando la sua vera identità, Thomas inizia a lavorare nel locale di Anat, che trasforma in un’attrazione cittadina grazie alle sue deliziose torte. Ben presto però si troverà coinvolto nella vita di Anat molto più di quanto avesse potuto immaginare, e si vedrà costretto a spingere la menzogna fino a un punto di non ritorno. Basato sulle vicende personali del regista, Der Kuchenmacher è una dichiarazione d’amore nei confronti delle persone, della vita, del cibo e del cinema, un film che ci obbliga a mettere in discussione le nostre definizioni di religione, sessualità e nazionalità.
Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who has frequent business visits in Berlin. When Oren dies in a car crash in Israel, Thomas travels to Jerusalem seeking for answers regarding his death. Under a fabricated identity, Thomas infiltrates into the life of Anat, his lover’s newly widowed wife, who owns a small Café in downtown Jerusalem. Thomas starts to work for her and create German cakes and cookies that bring life into her Café. Thomas finds himself involved in Anat's life in a way far beyond his anticipation, and to protect the truth he will stretch his lie to a point of no return. Based on a director’s personal experience, The Cakemaker is a declaration of love for people, life, food and cinema that forces us to question our own definitions of religion, sexuality and nationality.

È un regista e un videoartista israeliano. Dopo aver lavorato per anni nei più disparati settori, da quello tessile a quello gastronomico, ha iniziato a studiare cinema al Sapir College di Sderot, nel Distretto Meridionale di Israele. Durante gli studi, ha diretto svariati cortometraggi che sono stati presentati in numerosi festival e hanno riscosso apprezzamenti a livello mondiale. Dopo il diploma, ha co-diretto La Discothèque, cortometraggio presentato alla Quinzaine des Réalisateurs del Festival di Cannes e in altri festival. Parallelamente, è stato selezionato per partecipare al Nipkow Program, alla Berlinale Talents, all’Agora Film Market e ad altri workshop di cinema. Attualmente vive tra Berlino, Gerusalemme e la regione dello Uckermark, tiene corsi di cucina mediorientale e lavora ai suoi futuri progetti cinematografici.
An Israeli film director and video artist. After working for years in different branches, from textile to gastronomy, he went to study film in Sapir College, Sderot, in the south of Israel. During his studies, he directed several short films that were shown in numerous festivals and received worldwide acclaim. After his graduation he co-directed La Discotheque which was screened in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and other film festivals. Parallel he was accepted to the Nipkow Program, Berlinale Talents, Agora Film Market and other film workshops. The Cakemaker is his first feature film. Currently he lives on the line of Berlin-Jerusalem-Uckermark, teaching middle eastern cuisine and developing his next film projects.
