Una commedia degli equivoci ambientata in una Parigi in subbuglio. Due strani personaggi entrano nel surreale microcosmo dell’Hotel Occidental, facendo finta di essere italiani e provocando una serie di incomprensioni e buffi misunderstanding. Chi sono e cosa vogliono questi due individui? Sono forse malviventi che cercano di trovare un modo per derubare gli ospiti dell’albergo? O terroristi islamici che cercano di reclutare combattenti tra i dipendenti dell’hotel? La manager dell’hotel non si lascia convincere dai due loschi figuri e si rivolge alla polizia.
Un’avventura spiazzante, tutta in una notte, che non si concede mai facili risposte. Neïl Beloufa gioca con le differenze culturali per dar vita a una commedia sopra le righe, seduttiva e intrigante.
A hilarious comedy of misunderstandings set in Paris during a permanent riot. Two weird characters, pretending to be Italians, enter the surreal microcosm of the Hotel Occidental and provoke a series of absurd situations. Who are they? Is there some hidden agenda behind their mysterious whispers? Are they criminals trying to find their ways into hotel rooms in order to rob guests? Or maybe Islamic terrorist, attempting to recruit some potential fighter among the hotel staff? Suspicious about the two shady characters, the hotel manager calls the police to share her concerns.
An unsettling adventure that takes place over a night, Occidental is a film that never comes up with easy answers. Neïl Beloufa messes around with cultural differences in order to make a seductive and intriguing comedy.
Neïl Beloufa
Nato nel 1985, è un artista e regista franco-algerino. Ha studiato all’École national supérieure des beaux arts e all’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs di Parigi, alla CalArts, alla Cooper Union e a Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporain. I suoi video sono stati presentati in numerosi festival, tra cui Rotterdam IFFR, Toronto TIFF, London Film Festival e Paris Cinéma du Réel. Le sue opere e i suoi video sono stati esposti in tutto il mondo, comprese personali al MoMa, all’Hammer Museum e al Palais de Tokyo. Ha anche preso parte alla 55esima edizione della Biennale di Venezia.
Occidental è il suo primo lungometraggio. Film Auto-prodotto, è stato girato nel suo studio nella banlieue parigina. Finite le riprese, la location è stata trasformata in un art center, l’Occidental Temporary, che dopo un anno è stato chiuso.
Born in 1985, he is a French and Algerian artist and director. He studied at École National Supérieure des Beaux Arts and École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, at CalArts, Cooper Union and Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporain. His videos have been shown in festivals like Rotterdam IFFR, Toronto TIFF, London Film Festival, and Paris Cinéma du Réel among others. His artworks and videos have been displayed internationally including solo shows at the MoMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Palais de Tokyo. He also took part in the 55th Venice Biennale.
Occidental is his first fiction feature film. Self-produced, it was shot in his studio in Paris suburbs. The set of the movie then became an art center for one year, under the name of Occidental Temporary, before it got dismantled.
