La vita di Hassane, un ragazzo di Beirut rimasto senza lavoro e senza prospettive, sembra scorrere nell’apatia. Le sue giornate monotone si svolgono in spiaggia insieme agli amici, mentre in casa sua madre e suo padre non fanno altro che ricordargli quanto miserabile e senza uno scopo sia la sua esistenza. L’apatia si spezza nel momento in cui Hassane decide di tuffarsi in mare da un cavalcavia e muore annegato. In seguito alla sua morte, la comunità di amici si stringe nel cordoglio attorno al corpo senza vita dell’amico, ingaggiando insieme alla famiglia tutti i rituali di cordoglio dovuti a un martire. Tra l’arte visuale e la performance art, Martyr ci mostra l’inevitabile martirio della giovane popolazione libanese.
Hassane’s life, the one of a boy from Beirut without a job nor prospects, seems to be flowing lethargically. He spends his monotonous days on the beach with his friends, while at home his mother and father don’t do anything but reminding him how miserable and without purpose his existence is. The apathy breaks down when Hassane decides to dive from a flyover and dies drowning. After his death, his community of friends shares the grief around the lifeless body of his friend, engaging with the family all the rituals of mourning owed to a martyr. Between visual art and performance art, Martyr shows us the inevitable martyrdom of the young Lebanese population.
Mazen Khaled
Mazen Khaled è nato a Beirut, in Libano. Dopo essersi interessato di analisi delle politiche pubbliche e aver fatto ricerca si è occupato del mondo pubblicitario, scrivendo e dirigendo pubblicità per la televisione come parte del suo lavoro da direttore creativo. Ha studiato e lavorato a Beirut, Washington DC, Dubai e a Montreal. Il lavoro di Mazen tende a concentrarsi sul corpo, incorniciandolo con senso estetico ma anche racchiudendolo entro le cornici della spiritualità, della famiglia e della società, partendo dalla convinzione che quando dei corpi si uniscono lo fanno sfidando l’impossibile o esplorando la verità. Il risultato singolare è la costruzione di un’estetica unica, fugace e difficile da immortalare. Martyr è il suo primo lungometraggio dopo numerosi corti: Cadillac Blues (2002), Our Gentleman of the Wings (2010), My Queer Samsara (2010), A Very Dangerous Man (2012).
Mazen Khaled was born in Beirut, Lebanon. After a period spent involved in policy analysis and research, he moved to Advertising where he wrote and directed TV ads as part of his work as creative director. He studied and worked in Beirut, Washington DC, Dubai, and Montreal. Mazen’s work tends to focus on the human body, framing it aesthetically, but also placing it within the frameworks of spirituality, family, and society. This derives from the conviction that when bodies come together, they do it in defiance of the impossible, or in exploration of the truth. The singular result is a fleeting and difficult to capture construction of a unique aesthetic. Martyr is his first feature film after many short movies: Cadillac Blues (2002), Our Gentleman of the Wings (2010), My Queer Samsara (2010), A Very Dangerous Man (2012).
