Dopo aver seguito il vagabondare tragicomico dei protagonisti di Tangerine per i sobborghi californiani, con Un sogno chiamato Florida il regista Sean Baker poggia lo sguardo su un’altra realtà in movimento perpetuo, ossia quella dell’infanzia e degli inesauribili giochi della protagonista Moonee e dei suoi compagni di malefatte Jancey e Scooty. Nella surreale realtà del Magic Castle, una sorta di rivisitazione decadente del vicino castello di Walt Disney World, Moonee e sua madre Halee, ex ballerina disoccupata, si arrabattano per pagare l’affitto, ma la bambina non sembra rendersi conto delle difficoltà che la circondano.
After having chased through the Californian suburbs the tragicomic wandering of the main characters of Tangerine, with The Florida Project director Sean Baker takes an interest in another reality in perpetual movement, i.e., the childhood and the inexhaustible games of main character Moonee and her partners in crime Jancey and Scooty. In the surreal reality of Magic Castle, a sort of decaying reinterpretation of the nearby Walt Disney World Castle, Moonee and her mother Halee, a former dancer now unemployed, are struggling to pay rent, but the child does not seem to realize the difficulties that surround her.

Sean Baker è uno sceneggiatore e regista, reso noto dai film Take Out (2004), Prince of Broadway (2008) e Starlet (2012 – vincitore del Robert Altman Spirit Award). Nel 2015 ha realizzato Tangerine (2015), presentato in anteprima al Sundance Film Festival. Sean Baker è inoltre uno dei creatori dello show televisivo Greg the Bunny (2005) e del suo spin-off Warren the Ape (2010). Il suo ultimo film, Un sogno chiamato Florida, ha debuttato al Festival di Cannes 2017 e ha ricevuto grandi consensi sia per la regia che per la recitazione, tanto da essere scelto sia dal National Board of Review che dall’American Film Institute come uno dei dieci migliori film dell’anno.
Sean Baker is a writer and director known for the Spirit Award nominated films Take Out (2004), Prince of Broadway (2008) and Starlet (2012) (winner of the Robert Altman Spirit Award). In 2015, he directed Tangerine (2015), premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He is also one of the creators of the long running comedy television show entitled Greg the Bunny (2005) and its spin-off Warren the Ape (2010). His latest film, The Florida Project, premiered at 2017 Cannes Film Festival, was praised for its directing and acting: it was chosen by both the National Board of Review and American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year.
