Parigi, primi anni ’90. Il movimento di giovani attivisti gay ACT UP dà vita a contestazioni spettacolari, alla ricerca del metodo più efficace affinché istituzioni e opinione pubblica aprano gli occhi sulla dilagante epidemia di AIDS che da qualche anno sta mietendo vittime in tutto il mondo. Il racconto parzialmente autobiografico del regista Robin Campillo mantiene viva la memoria delle battaglie di ACT UP senza formule retoriche o eccessi celebrativi, ma al contrario utilizzando un linguaggio a tratti semi-documentaristico che cala lo spettatore in un quotidiano fatto di infiniti dibattiti e confronti tra questi giovani attivisti che combattono lo spettro della morte attraverso l’arma dell’euforia e della rabbiosa vitalità della giovinezza.
Paris, early 1990s. ACT UP, a group of young gay activists organizes sensational actions in order to fight the public and institutions’ general indifference to the widespread AIDS epidemic, which in recent years has been claiming countless victims all over the world. Robin Campillo’s account, which is partially based on autobiographical experiences, is intended to keep the memory of ACT UP’s battles alive, without any rhetorical attitude or celebratory excess, but instead using a documentary-like language through which the spectator penetrates into a daily life made up of endless disputes and debates between these young activists who fight the specter of death using as their only weapon the euphoria of youth and its angry vitality.
Robin Campillo
Nato in Marocco, ha studiato a Parigi presso l'Institut des hautes études cinématographiques. Dal 1998 inizia la sua collaborazione con Laurent Cantet, per i cui film lavora sia come montatore che come sceneggiatore. Per Cantet scrive la sceneggiatura di Ressources humaines (Premio César per la migliore opera prima nel 2001), e insieme scrivono quella di L'Emploi du temps (2001). Nel 2004 esordisce alla regia con Les revenants, presentato nella Sezione Orizzonti della Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia, mentre nel 2005 si occupa della sceneggiatura e del montaggio di Vers le sud, sempre diretto da Cantet. Scrive a sei mani con Cantet e François Bégaudeau il film Entre les murs, vincitore della Palma d’oro al 61º Festival di Cannes. Il suo secondo film da regista, Eastern Boys, nel 2013 vince il premio della sezione Orizzonti alla Mostra Internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia, mentre 120 battiti al minuto vince il Grand Prix Speciale della Giuria e la Queer Palm al Festival di Cannes 2017.
He is born in Morocco, he studies at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques of Paris. In 1998 he starts his collaboration with Laurent Cantet, for whom he works both as screenwriter as well as editor. He writes the screenplay for Cantet’s (1999, César Award for Best First Feature Film in 2001), and together they co-write (2001). In 2004 he makes his debut as a director with , which is selected in Venice Film Festival. In 2005, he writes and edits another Cantet’s film, . He co-authors the script of (Palme d’Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival) together with Cantet and François Bégaudeau. , his second film as a director, wins the Orizzonti section award in Venice, while receives the Grand Prix and Queer Palm at the Cannes Festival in 2017.
