Vung Tau, luogo di villeggiatura delle truppe americane a riposo durante la guerra in Vietnam, è anche la destinazione reale e metaforica di questo corto, in cui i movimenti animati di quattro frutti si sovrappongono alle immagini filmate dai soldati tra il 1966 e il 1968. Gli sketch mostrano la dimensione privata di una divisione dell’esercito in un momento di relax, tra tuffi nell’acqua e cerimonie religiose dal gusto beffardo. Attingendo a materiale di archivio inedito, i due registi sovvertono il senso delle immagini tramite le incursioni di due ananas, una banana e una mela, consegnando una visione estraniata e desacralizzata del conflitto bellico.

Vung Tau, a holiday resort destination for American troops on leave during the Vietnam War, is also the real and metaphorical destination of this short movie, in which the animated movements of four fruits overlap the images filmed by soldiers between 1966 and 1968. The sketches show the private dimension of an army division during a break, between plunging into water and mocking religious ceremonies. Drawing on unedited footage, the two filmmakers subvert the sense of the images thanks to the intrusions of two pineapples, a banana and an apple providing an alienated and desacralized point of view on war.

Benjamin Crotty, dopo avere studiato pittura a Yale, si trasferisce in Francia dove inizia la sua attività di artista e videomaker presso Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains. I suoi lavori hanno fatto il giro di festival come Locarno, Rotterdam e Lisbona e di istituzioni come la Tate Modern, il Palais de Tokyo di Parigi e il Centro d’Arte Contemporanea di Ginevra. Nel 2014 ha realizzato il suo primo lungometraggio, Fort Buchanan.
Bertrand Bezoteux è un regista di film sperimentali. Fin dal conseguimento del diploma a Le Fresnoy ha esposto i suoi lavori al Palais de Tokyo, al Centre Pompidou e alla Los Angeles Municipal Gallery e in eventi come il Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Marsiglia. Nel 2015 ha vinto l’Audi talents award per un progetto ispirato dall’esperimento Mars 500, con il quale si simulava un viaggio verso Marte. Nel 2016 il cortometraggio Pacifique è stato trasmesso dal canale ARTE.

After studying painting at Yale, Benjamin Crotty moved to France where he began his career as an artist and film maker at Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts. His work has been shown in festivals such as Locarno, Rotterdam and Lisbon, and in institutions such as the Tate Modern, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Center of Contemporary Art in Geneva. In 2014 he made his first feature film, Fort Buchanan.
Bertrand Bezoteux is an experimental director. Since his graduation from Le Fresnoy, he has exhibited his work at the Palais de Tokyo, the Pompidou Center and the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery, and in events such as the International Film Festival of Marseilles. In 2015, he won the Audi talents award for a project inspired by the experiment Mars 500, a simulation of a trip to Mars. In 2016, his short film Pacifique was broadcasted on ARTE channel.
