Nata ad Harlem a cavallo tra gli anni ’70 e ’80, il voguing è una danza che si ispira ai modelli che apparivano sulle pagine del magazine Vogue. All’epoca della sua nascita, i giovani gay, e le transessuali e drag queen afroamericane e latine si fronteggiavano in sfilate improvvisate, dalle quali avrebbero tratto spunto cantanti del calibro di Madonna. Nella Parigi degli anni 2000, Lasseindra Ninja è una delle danzatrici più in voga, avendo appreso in gioventù tutti i trucchi dalla storica crew newyorkese House of Ninja. Insieme a Stéphane Mizrahi le due iniziano al voguing una nuova generazione di drag queen e trans parigini.

Born in Harlem between the '70s and' 80s, Voguing is a dance inspired by the models that appeared on Vogue magazine. At the time of its birth, young homosexuals, transgender and drag queen were Afro-American and Latino and they would confront themselves in improvised parades, to which Madonna and other popular singer-songwriters would later refer to. In the Paris of the years 2000s, Lasseindra Ninja is one of the most popular dancers, having learned in her youth all the tricks from the historic New York House of Ninja crew. Together with Stéphane Mizrahi the two initiate a new generation of drag queen and Parisian trans into Voguing.

Gabrielle Culand è nata nei sobborghi parigini ma è cresciuta in New Caledonia. Ha iniziato la sua carriera girando dei video musicali e in seguito ha collaborato con dei produttori teatrali. Dal 2002 per otto anni la regista ha diretto quasi cento film su comunità alternative per il magazine francese Tracks (Arte). In seguito ha iniziato a girare documentari. Nel 2009 ha diretto Vagant, incentrato sui lavoratori stagionali e i viaggiatori europei. Nel 2012 ha scoperto la comunità del voguing di Parigi, e Paris is voguing è il risultato di tre anni di immersione tra i clan dei danzatori.

Gabrielle Culand is born in parisian suburb and grew up in New Caledonia. She started making some music videos and then collaborated with some theater producers. Since 2002 and for 8 years, the director signed almost a hundred films on alternatives communities for the french TV magazine Tracks, broadcasted on Arte. After she started making documentaries. In 2009 she directed Vagant, about European travelers and seasonal workers. In 2012 she discovers the voguing community in Paris. Paris is voguing is the result of three years of immersion inside some dancing clans.
