Per circa quarant’anni Norma Roos e Virginia Kaitchuck hanno collezionato fotografie della loro vita di coppia, delle loro abitudini e della loro comunità. Ritrovate dalla regista Michelle Citron, le fotografie che seguono i decenni dalla fine degli anni ’30 alla fine dei ’70, diventano testimonianze preziose per raccontarci una storia parallela al racconto della cultura americana mainstream. Lavoratrici nella Chicago pre-Stonewall, le loro foto ci mostrano un universo segreto restituendoci in tal modo una visione intima e affettiva, antitetica alla rappresentazione maschile e sessista delle pin up dell’epoca. In tal modo la Citron ci offre una nuova storiografia, femminile e femminista, componendo un quadro più sfaccettato dell’America di ieri e di oggi.

For forty years, Norma Roos and Virginia Kaitchuck collected pictures of their everyday life, portraying their private habits as well as their life as a couple in their community. The snapshots, uncovered by director Michelle Citron, become the precious testament of a story running in parallel with the mainstream american narrative between the 1930s and the '70s. The pictures they take as pre-Stonewall workers in Chicago reveal a secret, intimate view on their universe, diametrically opposed to the male chauvinist pin-up portrayal of women so characteristic of the time. Citron thus presents a new, female centered and feminist historiography, enrichening our picture of past and present America with new pleasantly unexpected undertones.

Michelle Citron è nata a Boston (Massachusetts). Dopo essersi laureata in psicologia presso la University of Massachussetts, ha proseguito gli studi conseguendo un dottorato presso la University of Wisconsin – Madison. Dal 1978 al 2012 ha insegnato Cinema, Radio e Televisione presso la Northewestern University e il Columbia College di Chicago. Parallelamente ha iniziato a dirigere documentari, tramite i quali ha esplorato l’universo femminile. I corti sperimentali e i documentari da lei diretti sono Self-Defence e Integration(1973) Parthenogenesis(1975) Daughter Rite (1978) What You Take for Granted… (1983) Mother Rite(1983) Leftovers(2014) e Lives:Visible. Dal 1999 ha iniziato ad interessarsi alla narrativa multimediale e interattiva, mostrando una serie di racconti di donne lesbiche, che ha poi accorpato nel sito Queerfeast.com.

Michelle Citron was born in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts, she pursued her studies gaining her PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Between 1978 and 2012 she has been a lecturer in Cinema, Radio and Television at Northwestern University and Columbia College, Chicago. At the same time, she begun directing documentaries, which became her instrument to explore the feminine universe. Her avant-garde short films include Self-Defence and Integration(1973) Parthenogenesis(1975) Daughter Rite (1978) What You Take for Granted… (1983) Mother Rite(1983) Leftovers(2014) e Lives:Visible. . Since 1999, she became involved with multimedia interactive narration techniques, which she used to tell a series of stories of lesbian women, merged into the website Queerfeast.com.
