Bloccati da mesi a Idomeni, al confine tra la Grecia e la Macedonia, più di 15.000 rifugiati curdi, siriani, pakistani e afghani decidono di far partire una rivolta, interrompendo il passaggio dei treni che attraversano il campo. Ripresi inizialmente in interminabili file per cibo o medicinali, dopo essere stati ridotti a sagome, a “spettri” che attendono in un limbo fatto di fango e di pioggia, nel lirico epilogo i rifugiati assurgono a individui. Inquadrati frontalmente ne possiamo osservare i volti, gli sguardi imbarazzati dalla telecamera, che investono lo spettatore interpellandolo direttamente. Il testo conclusivo è un’accusa diretta all’Europa istituzionale, ma in prima istanza ai suoi abitanti, colpevoli di aver annientato le proprie ideologie e dimenticato il proprio passato, rievocato da un altro spettro, quello di Walter Benjamin, morto suicida nel 1940 in seguito al rifiuto del visto che lo avrebbe fatto imbarcare per gli Stati Uniti.
Stuck for months at Idomeni, on the border between Greece and Macedonia, more than 15.000 Kurdish, Syrian, Pakistani and Afghan refugees decide to start a riot, interrupting the passage of the trains crossing the field. Initially filmed standing in endless queues for food or medicines, after turning gaunt, like "ghosts" who are waiting in a limbo made of mud and rain, in this lyrical epilogue through which these refugees become individuals. Framed frontally we can observe their faces, their looks embarrassed by the camera which invest the audience, engaging it directly. The final text is a direct accusation to institutional Europe, but above all things to its inhabitants, guilty of having destroyed their own ideologies and forgotten their past, evoked by another spectrum, that of Walter Benjamin, who committed suicide in 1940 as a result of the refusal of the visa that would have let him embark to the United States.
Maria Kourkouta
Nata nel nord della Grecia nel 1982, dopo aver studiato Storia dei Balcani si trasferisce a Parigi nel 2006, dove attualmente vive la maggior parte dell’anno. In Francia ha svolto alcune ricerche per il suo dottorato incentrate sul ritmo nel cinema. Dal 2008 ha girato vari film, la maggior parte in 16mm, per diversi laboratori creativi in Francia (tra i tanti L’Etna e L’Abominable) per i quali lavora ancora attivamente. La maggior parte del suo lavoro cinematografico è distribuito dalla Light Cone.
Born in northern Greece in 1982, after studying Balkan History she moves to Paris in 2006, where she currently lives most of the year. In France, she has done some research for her PhD particularly focused on the pace of cinema. Since 2008, she has been making several movies, mostly in 16mm, for various creative workshops in France (like L’Etna and L’abominable among many) for which she still works actively. Most of her works are distributed by Light Cone.
