Ben è un uomo francese di quarantacinque anni che vive a Phnom Penh, in una Cambogia ancora infestata dai fantasmi dei crimini compiuti dai Khmer Rossi. Di sera Ben diventa Mirinda, travestita e prostituta al Blue Bar. Un giorno la sua vita cambia improvvisamente: Viri, il suo compagno, sparisce e nella sua vita entra Panna Nat, una ragazzina con la quale dovrà intraprendere un viaggio attraverso il paese asiatico alla ricerca della famiglia di lei. Le circostanze lo porteranno a scoprire un sentimento paterno fino ad allora sconosciuto. De l’ombre il y a è un film lontano da una retorica affettata, racconta di un’umanità che nasce dal dolore e dall’orrore di esistenze ai margini, un soffio di aria fresca per un’opera piena di fascino e di cruda bellezza.

Ben is a forty-five-year-old French man who lives in Phnom Penh, in a Cambodia still haunted by ghosts of the crimes committed by the Khmer Rouge. At night, Ben becomes Mirinda, a transvestite prostitute at the Blue Bar. One day his life suddenly changes: his partner Viri disappears, and Panna Nat enters his life. He undertakes a journey across the Asian countryside with her in search of her family. These circumstances lead him to discover a previously-unknown paternal sentiment. De l’ombre il y a is a film without affected rhetoric. It tells the story of a humanity born from the sorrow and horror of an existence lived at the borders. The film is a breath of fresh air, a work full of charm and raw beauty.
