Una ragazza è in balia di uno statico onanismo che la tiene prigioniera tra le mura della sua casa. Affamata e irrequieta, scrive di getto i suoi pensieri su fogli di carta con cui tenta di ritrovare una logicità che pare aver ormai perduto. Ormai conscia del fatto che le necessità non possono essere saziate da processi interiori, intraprende un viaggio da un capo all'altro della Francia per colmare quei vuoti che solo l'altro può tentare di saziare: magari lui, un camionista incontrato per caso, o lei, un'amante da tempo dimenticata, o forse tu, spettatore, che ti interroghi sui lunghi silenzi che circondano la protagonista. Un manifesto avanguardista che, grazie anche a una coraggiosa messa in scena, è riuscito ad anticipare ampiamente tematiche e argomenti di grande interesse nel panorama artistico odierno.
A girl is at the mercy of a static onanism that keeps her imprisoned between her house's walls. Hungry and unsettled, she writes her thoughts on papers in one go whereby she tries to recover her lost cogency. By now aware about the fact that her necessities cannot be satisfied by internal processes, she undertakes a trip from end to end of France to fill those holes that only the other could try to satisfy: maybe him, a truck driver met by change, or her, a lover forgot long time ago, or maybe you, viewer, that question yourself about the long silences that surround the protagonist. An avant-garde manifest that, also thanks to a brave mise-en-scene, succeeded to hasten themes and topics of great interest in the today's artistic panorama.

È nata a Bruxelles nel 1950 da una coppia polacca sopravvissuta alla tragedia dell'Olocausto. Il suo amore per il cinema nasce all'improvviso, dopo aver visto Pierrot le fou di Jean-Luc Godard, che l'ha spinta a soli 15 anni a diventare una regista. Nel 1968 gira il suo primo film, Saute ma ville, presentato all'Oberhausen short-film festival. Poco dopo si trasferisce a New York dove resta fino al 1972. Qui viene profondamente influenzata dai lavori di Micheal Snow, Yvonne Rainer e Andy Warhol. Ritornata in Belgio, il suo Je, tu, il, elle viene riceve un discreto successo tra la critica. Nel 1975 esce quello che da molti è considerato il suo film più significativo ed uno tra i più grandi film femministi della storia del cinema, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. Chantal Akerman ci lascia prematuramente il 5 Ottobre del 2015, pochi mesi dopo l'uscita del suo ultimo film, No Home Movie, una serie di toccanti conversazioni con la madre Natalia poco prima della morte.
She was born in Bruxelles in 1950 from a polish couple survived from the Holocaust's tragedy. Her love for cinema borns suddendly, after viewing of Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le fou, which make her decide to become a director. In 1968 she shoott her first film, Saute ma ville, premiered at the Oberhausen short-film festival. Shortly after she moves to New York where she remains untill 1972. Here she is profoundly influenced by the work of Michael Snow, Yvonne Rainer and Andy Warhol. Back to Belgium, her Je, tu, il, elle receives critical recognition. In 1975 is released the movie that is considered her most significant one and one of the greatest feminist movie in the history of cinema, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. Chantal Akerman leaves us prematurely the 5th October 2015, a few months after the release of her last movie, No Home Movie, a series of touching conversations with her mother Natalia shortly after her death.
