Nel 1931, al vertice della sua carriera, il regista sovietico Sergei Eisenstein è in Messico per girare un film. Incalzato dal regime stalinista, che vorrebbe richiamarlo in patria quanto prima, Eisenstein passa gli ultimi dieci giorni del suo viaggio nella cittadina di Guanajuato. Sarà qui, con la complicità della sua guida Palomino Cañedo, che scoprirà molte cose sul Messico ma anche sulla propria sessualità e identità di artista. Con uno stile visionario che non ha eguali nel cinema contemporaneo, Greenaway firma un ritratto originale e irriverente del grande regista russo, legandolo a una riflessione sul cinema, il sesso e la morte che sconvolge e affascina. Accolto con entusiasmo all’ultimo Festival di Berlino, il film segna il ritorno di Greenaway all’energia coinvolgente delle sue opere migliori.
In 1931, at the top of his career, the soviet director Sergei Eisenstein is in Mexico to shoot a movie. Pursued by the Stalinist's regime, which wishes to recall him to his homeland as soon as possible, Eisenstein spends the last days of his trip in the small town of Guanajuato. It's here, with the complicity of his guide Palomino Cañedo, that he will discover many things about Mexico but also about his own sexuality and artistic identity. With an unparallelled visionary style in the contemporary cinema, Greenaway signs an original and irreverent portrait of the great soviet director, connecting him to a reflection on cinema, sex and death that shocks and attracts at the same time. Welcomed with entusiasm at the last Berlin Festival, the movie marks Greenaway's return to the engaging energy of his best works.
Peter Greenaway
Nato a Newport (Galles) nel 1942, Peter Greenaway è un regista, artista, sceneggiatore e drammaturgo britannico. Si interessa al cinema durante i suoi studi di pittura, che lo portano ad avvicinarsi alla Settima Arte prima come critico cinematografico, poi come montatore per il Central Office of Information. Debutta nel mondo del cinema con Le cadute (1980), premiato dal British Film Institut. Ma è solo alla Mostra di Venezia che arriva il successo internazionale con I misteri del giardini di Compton House (1982). Nel 2014 riceve il premio BAFTA, massima onorificenza del cinema inglese, per la sua lunga carriera. Oltre ai già citati, tra i suoi film più famosi ricordiamo Il cuoco, il ladro, sua moglie e l’amante (1989), L’ultima tempesta (1991), I racconti del cuscino (1996).
Born in Newport, Wales, in 1942 Peter Greenaway is a British director, artist, screenwriter and playwright. He gets interested to cinema during his painting studies, which push him towards the Seventh Art, first as a movie critic, then as an editor for the Central Office of Information. He debuts in the world of cinema with The Falls (1980), awarded by the British Film Institute. However the international success arrives only at the Venice Exhibition with The Draughtsman's Contract (1982). In 2014 he received the BAFTA prize, the highest honour in the British cinema, for his long career. In addition to the already quoted, among his most famous movies we can mention The Cook The Thief His Wife & Her Lover (1989), Prospero's Books (1991), The Pillow Book (1996).
