L’isola della Giudecca, a sud del centro storico di Venezia, è la sede del Convento delle Convertite, ormai quasi da 200 anni un carcere femminile destinato alla reclusione e alla riabilitazione delle prigioniere condannate. L’edificio però era ancora prima un convento dove prostitute e donne considerate immorali venivano rinchiuse contro la loro volontà. Dietro quelle mura, e in particolare nel parlatorio, c’è però un’altra storia, per la quale le donne si esibivano per l’alta società, offrendo spettacoli di travestitismo, talvolta anche blasfemo.
Il corto di Pauline Curnier Jardin inizia quieto sulla voce fuoricampo di una prigioniera, ma lentamente, tramite disegni e viraggi al negativo, si trasforma in un trip funky di collage dadaisti e animazioni stralunate, una notte stellata di fuochi d’artificio che scopre un’energia mai sopita, ammiccante ed esaltata, come con un rituale alternativo a quello sacro, in un funambolico controcampo profano.

The island of Giudecca, south of the historic center of Venice, is the home of the Convent of the Convertite, which for about 200 years has been a women’s jail for the imprisonment and rehabilitation of condemned prisoners. Even before that, the building was a convent where prostitutes and women considered immoral were locked up against their will. Nevertheless, behind those walls, and in particular in the parlor, there is another story, and according to this story women performed for high society offering shows of transvestism, sometimes even blasphemous.
Pauline Curnier Jardin’s short movie begins quietly on the voice over of a prisoner, but slowly, through drawings and negative toning, transforms into a funky trip of Dadaist collages and dazed animations, a starry night of fireworks that discovers a never dormant energy, winking and exalted, as with an alternative ritual to the sacred one, in a acrobatic profane countershot.
